EMDR Therapy in Richmond

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s now widely used to help with anxiety, grief, phobias, negative self-beliefs, and other challenges rooted in past experiences. You don’t have to have a “capital T” trauma for EMDR to help. Many clients benefit from reprocessing “little t” traumas — moments that left a lasting impact even if they seem less significant on the surface.

EMDR with me is collaborative, compassionate, and paced to your unique nervous system. We’ll work together to identify the core beliefs and memory networks that are keeping you stuck. Then, using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping), we’ll help your brain safely reduce the emotional charge so you can move forward with greater ease.

EMDR can help with…

❊ PTSD, complex trauma, or disturbing memories

❊ Anxiety, panic attacks, or phobias

❊ Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)

❊ Relationship struggles and attachment wounds

❊ Complicated grief

❊ Feeling “frozen” or emotionally overwhelmed

❊ Perfectionism and people-pleasing

❊ Burnout and chronic stress

Ongoing EMDR sessions

Many clients choose to do EMDR as part of their regular weekly or biweekly therapy sessions. This approach lets us move at a steady pace, reprocessing memories over time with room to pause, reflect, and integrate. It’s a great option if you’re looking for consistent support while working through deeper patterns at a sustainable rhythm.

EMDR intensives

EMDR intensives are extended sessions designed to help you move through targeted memories more quickly and deeply than in weekly therapy. This format can be helpful if you’re feeling stuck, navigating a transition, or simply want to accelerate your healing. We’ll work together to decide if this accelereated approach is the right fit for your goals.

My office is conveniently located in Hanover County, just one mile off I-95 (Exit 86 / Atlee) and is easily accessible from downtown Richmond, Short Pump, Glen Allen, and Ashland. 1. We’ll start with a 90min intake session to assess your history, needs, and goals for treatment. During this session, we’ll practice grounding techniques in preparation for reprocessing.

    2. For most people, we can address a single traumatic experience or phobia in 1-2 intensive sessions (3 hours each). For those facing complex, attachment, and childhood traumas, we will likely schedule 3-6 intensive sessions.

    3. We’ll follow up about a month later for a 60min session, to see how things are going and address any lingering concerns.

  • Yes, I regularly collaborate with outside therapists and can offer intensives or ongoing EMDR as a supplement to the work you’re already doing. With your consent, I’m happy to coordinate with your other therapist to ensure our work together aligns with your broader therapeutic goals.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy originally developed to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s now widely used to help with anxiety, grief, phobias, negative self-beliefs, and other challenges rooted in past experiences.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements, tapping, or tones) to help your brain reprocess distressing memories in a more adaptive way. If you’ve ever paced while talking through something difficult on the phone, or found that a problem feels clearer after a good night’s worth of REM sleep, you’ve experienced the power of bilateral processing.

The brain is a fascinating puzzle! While researchers don’t yet fully understand why EMDR works, decades of clinical research show that it does — and it’s recognized as a frontline treatment for PTSD by organizations like the American Psychological Association and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This overview from EMDRIA is a great introduction to the benefits of this trauma treatment.

While no one therapy is ever a guarantee, research suggests that you may see more efficient or lasting success using EMDR than in typical talk therapy.
